The Beyond Basketball Foundation

The Beyond Basketball Foundation is the parent organization of the Harlem Kings. It is a qualified 501(c) (3) non-profit organization. We believe that kids of all economic status and neighborhoods deserve the same educational opportunities. It is our belief that kids living in the inner-city do not have the same educational and life opportunities of kids living in wealthier communities. For those kids who grow up with inferior educational treatment and lack other support mechanisms, it is unfair to expect that they will be able to compete as adults with those who have such advantages.

The Kennedy CenterBasketball prowess is widely admired and valued by most in our society. Also, it is a gift of many inner-city kids. We plan to package this gift with other admired attributes, and then trade it for improved educational training and other opportunities. By combining basketball ability with strong citizenship and academic potential, we will pursue scholarship opportunities that may otherwise not be available. Like high test scores or other accomplishments, many private secondary schools and universities attach a value to basketball ability when considering potential applicants.

We will work to improve not only our kids' basketball skills but also their academic ability, and citizenship so that opportunities are possible. With refined skills and attributes, we will seek to match our kids with academic institutions where they can start to build a foundation for a life beyond basketball.

We do not seek to take away the dream of kids that some day they can be the next NBA superstar. Instead we hope to use this dream to motivate our kids to do better in all aspects in their life. Our goal is to keep our kids dreaming, but at the same, to offer chances and options where they can start dreaming of a life outside of basketball. We want to help them develop lives that start with a foundation in education and values beyond basketball. We strongly believe that educational equality will lead to good careers and societal accomplishments. It is not our goal to train future NBA players, but instead to provide a foundation for a successful life beyond basketball. The game or competition is not basketball, but “life”.

We believe in the African proverb "that it takes a village to raise a child". We seek to be part of the village.

Mission, Vision, and Value Statement

Our mission is to help our kids win the game of life. We believe that education is critical to the success of a person’s life.

We are committed to a program that uses basketball as a tool to motivate and encourage kids from the inner-city neighborhoods of New York to strive for life success beyond the sport of basketball. We seek to use basketball and academic achievement to obtain educational and other opportunities for kids that otherwise would be unattainable.

We value:

  • Excellence
  • Commitment
  • Winning
  • Sportsmanship
  • Teamwork
  • Leadership
  • Pride
  • Achievement

We hope that our kids will become tomorrow’s leaders on and off the basketball court.
